The Construction Process photo provided by the Capital Newspaper
Because the construction of the new Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County building took place in a busy downtown district - and because court needed to continue in session as construction proceeded, the project was done in two phases. The above photograph shows the construction of the Phase I building along Cathedral Street. This portion of the building houses the courtrooms and was the temporary home for court employees as Phase II was built. The photo above illustrates the "stepping back" of the building on the main entrance level back to the glass-enclosed gallery. This area was landscaped and the sidewalk was bricked along South Street to blend with the historic setting of downtown Annapolis. The "piano wall" pictured above is the connector between the 1824 courthouse and the 2000 addition. It is the link between old and new, and was dubbed the "piano wall" because of Grand Piano-like curve it makes between the two buildings. All visitors to the courthouse enter through this area to get to the courtrooms and other court departments.
